Students were dismissed for a kiss

This entry was posted on Friday, November 16th, 2007.

Two junior high school students kissing in the class room, and be found by the headmaster of the school, then they were dismissed from school, news from GuangDong province of China.

They were studying in Grade Three at BoYa Junior Middle School, in fact, the so-called "puppy love" problem is a thorny issue for all teachers in China.

A survey has found that many students at a school in Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, treat puppy love as a fashion, calling each other "husband" or "wife" in public.

Local media who conducted the survey urged schools and parents to help students get back to their studies and not dream away their time on young love.

But I don't think so, in my option, puppy love is normal and no problem, why? Look at this: Legal marry age in world countries .

I agree, puppy love is normal and should not be a problem. Of course, if the students are continually showing puppy love, and not doing their work, then it should be addressed. But if it’s during playtime, or a break, puppy love is no big deal. It’s a part of growing up.

Something similar just happened in the states as well. I believe two 12 year old girls were hugging goodbye, and they got suspended. If I find the link, I will certainly post it.

Someone sent me an email directing me to this post on your blog. It’s probably because I just wrote a post on the same subject, but happening in the Middle East. I am a third-grade teacher (of eight-year-olds) at an American School in the Middle East. My post is about a girl with a serious problem in that there is a boy who has loved her since they were three, but she does NOT love him! My post is about her problem, and what I did to help her. It’s called “One Girl’s Problem - Stalked Since Nursery School,” at:

I’ve looked at your blog and found it very interesting. I’ve actually been looking for an interesting blog out of China. I attempted to sign up for your RSS feed, and there seems to be a problem. When I try to add it, I keep getting the message: “RSS feed cannot be found.” But at any rate, I’ve linked it to my own blog, so I can find it again, and I also think my own readers will be interested in your blog.

Thank you for writing on this interesting and timely topic.

Best regards,
Eileen

In Colombia where I teach at a large university, this is not a problem. Even in Primary schools, why? Because in this culture, kissing and other platonic physical contact is normal. People including both adults and children, kiss in greetings whether they are same sex or not. It’s Okay here. If it “interferes with work or studies” then yes, address it as a potential problem. If not, why bother? It’s certainly better that a fist fight, teasing or jeering. The reaction to this sort of contact largely depends on the culture of the country or region involved. Children and adults are expected to respect the “norms” of the culture where they line, regardless. My question is, so what do teachers do when it becomes a “problem” with young learners there in China?
