Spring Transportation around the Spring Festival

This entry was posted on Tuesday, January 8th, 2008.

The Spring Transportation will be started from January 23th to March 2nd.

Spring Transportation refers to the extremely high traffic load of transportation in China around the time of Chinese Lunar New Year. This period is also called "spring festival travel season" or "Chunyun period". The high traffic load usually begins 15 days before the Lunar New Year, and lasts for around 40 days.

Spring Transportation around the Spring Festival

The number of passengers during the Spring Transportation has exceeded the population of China. Three main factors are responsible for the heightened traffic load during the Chunyun period:

First, it is a long-held tradition for most Chinese people to reunite with their families during Chinese New Year. People return home from work or study to have Reunion dinner with their families on New Year's eve. During the chunyun period, many of the laborers return to their home towns.

Second, Chinese education reforms have increased the number of university students, who often study outside of their hometown. The Spring Festival holiday period falls around the same time frame as their winter break. Among the 144 million railway passengers of the 2006 Chunyun period were 6.95 million university students.

Finally, many people choose to travel for pleasure around the Spring Festival Period. Tourism in mainland China is reaching record levels, further adding to the pressure on the transportation system.

These factors exacerbate current problems with China's current inter-city transportation systems. The railway network is insufficient to handle the amount of passengers, and does not reach enough places. The locations not served by railway must rely on bus transport, which face problems such as inadequate equipment and an insufficient road network.

When we lived in Beijing we would always stay put during this time because of the huge burden on the transportation system.. It was quite nice actually as Beijing would seem very quiet and we had fun spotting the country folk at Tiannamenn Square visiting for the first time.

In Malaysia there’s 3 seasons when all public transports fully booked a month before and the highway would jammed for hours - eid-ul fitr celebration, eid-ul adha(for muslim) and chinese new year. last 2 years, the whole family and i have been stucked for hours as we’re on our way to my cousin’s wedding during chinese new year eve.

as multi racial country, we have a lot of public holidays. Just name it, chinese new year, deepavali, christmas and a lot2 more celebration. As other celebrate the days, other would choose the day for wedding, engagement etc..

By the Way, Happy Chinese New Year!
p/s: we’re muslim celebrate our new year tomorrow..10th january
