central healing? :D sounds like a religious cult. central heating system is a machine in the basement of a building that gives heat to everyone there. Your room only has "heating".

18% per year is not he world most expensive credit card ;) 22% and 26% are very common. I think some are 30%. I don't really care what mine is at. The whole idea is to not pay credit fee. Pay your bill in full every month. Haagen-Dazs is from Germany as far as I believe. Starbucks is big chain for cheap shit coffee. Only people who does not know what coffee is likes StarBuck. It's real funny to see the Chinese perceptions on everything american. very interresting. I think I'm gonna follow your blog for a little while.

Hey friend, That's really cool what you did. Glad that more people will visit your blog and learn from as well as share with you. I believe that it is a powerful motivation to perceive the interest that people have in what you do. In my case, I feel like 'compelled' to write something good for the world. With only five articles on my page (yet), I have 6300 blog views. That's incredible. Besides, I'm second in a Google Search. Very soon, you and I, gonna be first ..hehe.. (And probably get some money with AdSense..lol). Anyway, keep up the good blogging.. From Mauritius, Shailen Sobhee.

Language can be intense. We all want to communicate, and for the most part, we're all communicating the same thing to each-other — just in different ways and motions of the mouth/tongue. As a side note, are you guys excited for the olympics coming soon?

Wow, I can't wait to comment on some of your posts ^_^ You have some typical prejudices and I'm hoping you'll post some more so we can have interesting discussions. In the mean time, something that I've taught all my Chinese friends here is that 复杂 words in English are almost always superfluous ;) 再见

If I buy a product, and can do what I want with it (and not just 'rent' a product, such as a ringtone), then I should not have to put up with any form of advertising. If I'm renting a service (a ringtone, cable tv, etc), then by all means put advertising on it if it means my montly costs will be lower.

There should be an option for the customer to opt-out of receiving those ads on the mobile. There is a similar law passed here in the US for telephone marketing. Once you're on the "do not call" list, the telemarketers are not supposed to call you. This could be done for the mobile phone as well.

As you know advertising is my job. An me too, I dont like invasive and bad advertisement. The problem is that in a capitalistic economy, enterprises must sell, and to sell one must advertise. The world over, regardless of the political regime there simply are to meny enterprises, too may products, to many ads. My job, in part is to make ads more acceptable, and to to find new and better ways to male them pleasant and more acceptable ro people just like yourself Shang Ning. To buy products and to be happy about them, one must start to enjoy their ads, and not to hate them… Alex

Hi. Like "pir" who commented up above, I do not remember signing up for any Feedburner subscription to this blog; but I did visit the blog a few days ago … I "accepted" the subscription because your blog is very interesting and I had bookmarked it when I was here before soI could easily return. Pir got a little complicated in his answer about the "what language do the profoundly deaf think in?"  I am a hearing person who learned American Sign Language. The classes are usually taught by people who are deaf, or whose parents are deaf. The answer they give to that question is — just like their language is visual not spoken, so is their thinking. They see an apple when they think about an apple. Those who learn to "read lips" and don't use sign language, also see the image of the apple in their mind not the shape of a mouth saying the word. For abstract words, like "love" or "sorrow" — they would do what we do — imagine how that feels — how it feels to be loved, to love, or to be in love, et cetera. Great questions. I like the one about a used hard disk. I'd never thought about that and had not considered that changing the surface through the magnetizing could change more than the structure — that it might change the weight of the hard disk. Maybe that is why my laptop seems heavier the more I use it. **grin**

I will also try to answer the first question. They don't know sounds so they won't use any, but they'll build up their own symbols to mentally represent things, so to them an apple will simply be an "apple", if even to them it means no sounds, but rather an image of the object.. Alex

not all thought is verbal. some is visual. and in fact most thought passes through our minds without eliciting any visual response or verbal instance. i don't see the word "apple" or an image of an apple when i think of apples, only when i remember eating a specific one, or looking at apples, or when i consider questions about visualization or verbalization. if we thought in language, why would we ever have problems finding the right words to communicate a complex feeling? people argue forever about the connotations of words, and some keep making up new ones to more properly express what's going on in their minds. what came first, the thought or the concept? our thoughts are affected by what we are taught, and somebody who has no language is usually developmentally behind those who do. but before there was language, how did people think? clearly they must have. even pre-verbal children and animals think. language is born from a desire to get what's in your head out to communicate it to others; there's got to be something THERE for it to want to come out. that's how profoundly deaf people think. before they're taught sign language. and then they think and dream as much in sign language as the rest of us think in words. fascinating stuff. and yet, a more important question on my mind today: why did i just get spammed to read your blog? i didn't request an email subscription, i had never heard of you. spamming is not a good way to get more readers ("ah, but YOU commented", you might say — just this once to tell you not to spam, and now i am gone).

1) Do bits have mass? Yes, yes they do. Of course, all 'zeros' is *exactly* the same as all 'ones'. A bit is either on or off, and is represented by a little magnetic piece of metal. It's mass is the same regardless of whether it stores a '1' or a '0'. Therefore the mass is the same regardless of what data you have as you aren't physically adding more magnetic bits.

I obviously cannot answer to the second question, but I guess I have a reply for the first: data on a hard disk are written by magnetising the surface, that makes the Iron Oxide layer gest altered by the magnetic field. I would say yes, mass will change very lightly… Alex

I understand your feelings, but still, I find it absurd. In Europe we are lucky enough to mate with the person we like, despite social conventions, religion or status. Actually the ones that are looking for a rich person in first place are badly considered. For instance i live with my girlfriend since 22 years now. I wanted to marry, she wouldn't. Guess who decided? >still, before meeting her I was alone for 7 years… Alex

I wouldn't call Talk Like a Pirate Day a festival although some would beg to differ - at least it's not a traditional festival. It is a lot of fun though. I would love to be in China tomorrow for your festival. I spent my first time in China last year visiting Hong Kong, Shanghai and Yiwu. Would love to go back again.

I get many scam emails in a day. Lottery scams, paypal scams, ebay, IRS and a lot more of them. I usually turn them in to the actual websites or businesses themselves. This allows me to help them find the people who are doing it and stop them, but I also find out if the ones I'm uncertain about are scams or not.

Hi ShangNing, it's sad that old buildings with historical values are "fading". Luckily for Singapore's Chinatown shops, they've been conserved but painted with vibrant shades of red, green and blue. P.S. I think some day, those photos of buildings that no longer exist will be very valuable for future generations.

I understand that people want comfort and modernity, but that way China is simply throwing away their history and their traditions, and they will eventually come to regret it. Why not doing the way we did in Italy in such places like Rome, Florence and Venice, but also in less artistically important cities like Milan, preserve at least the exterior of the housing and renove the inside? It is more expensive, in a way, but renovated ancient houses are selling far more expensive than new ones, and rich people is looking for them, while living in a new, cheap house is considered out of standard. Also, renovating the cities has brought to a condition in which shops totally disappeared from the center, leaving place only to banks and supermarkets. We are all very upset because of it. Alex
