I am an advocate of alternatives to Microsoft even though I use a Windows platform. First, I would never buy a Windows notebook computer that wasn’t made in Japan or Taiwan. Second, I have been looking for alternatives to Microsoft Office and can recommend Open Office (it’s free) but also Kingsoft. Kingsoft is a Chinese company and makes great software. The anti-virus program they have is also working really well for me on my Japanese Windows Victor notebook.
Kingsoft has done a great job so far of adapting their products to the Japanese language computing environment and has marketed them at a very affordable price.
