How to boot up Mac OS X in console mode

May 18th, 2008 | No Comments »

I have a Mac Mini conputer and it is too slow to do anything, because there is only 256MB memories and the free memories is few when the Aqua running.

So, I think I can DIY it into a server, just booting up in console mode, and running the Apache, Mysql, PHP and Perl on it.

There are the steps:

First, running SSH server on it, you can login the Mac OS in another conputer in SSH. If you do anything wrong, you can login in another computer and recover the modification.

Then, edit the file “/etc/ttys”, found two lines below:

# console “/usr/libexec/getty std.9600″ vt100 on secure
console “/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/loginwindow” vt100 …

Delete the # character from in front of the first line, and place a # character in front of the second line. Then save the file.

Third, delete (or move) the file “/etc/mach_init.d/WindowServer.plist”.

Now, restart your Mac and you will find it is running in the console mode :D

Some friends did not do the third step, so they can not book up Mac in console mode, and their Mac OS stopped in a blue screen, just login in Root in ssh with another computer, and done the third step, then your Mac will be startup again.

When my Mac became a server, the free memories incresase to more than 100MB, now, I installed a lot of interesing servers on it, cool~

Movie Review: The Forbidden Kingdom

May 3rd, 2008 | 5 Comments »

About 78 days ago, I said “I’m waitting for The Forbidden Kingdom, it must be a great movie I believe”. And today, I watched it in my computer.

Objectively speaking, the Forbidden Kingdom movie is not very good, it seems to me a low-cost film. There a lot of actions are wasteful of time, but lack of the film’s plot and the players’ character.

This movie fell flat on myself, I searched its reviews of others, it is generally believed that it is not as excellence as they hope.

The leading roles are Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Liu Yifei, Li Bingbing, Collin Chou and Michael Angarano.

Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Liu Yifei, Collin Chou, Li Bingbing are all Chinese, but the film producted for the Occidental people. So, the film are not an essential quality of the Chinese cultural of Tang dynasty.

If you has not wathch it yet, I suggest that you do not waste money on it.

Beijing Botanical Garden is world of trees and ocean of flowers

May 3rd, 2008 | 3 Comments »

Last week, I went to Beijing Botanical Garden, I went there every year. It is a world of trees ans an oceans of flowers I think.

The botanical garden situated in the northwestern outskirts of Beijing between Fragrant Hills Park and Jade Spring Mountain in the Western Hills.

This time, it is the time of the tulips are in full bloom, the yellow tulips and red tulips are lying around everywhere. What a spectacular view!

If you like Beijing Parks, there are two other topics about the parks in Beijing: Beijing Shijingshan Amusement Park and Fragrant Hills Park.

Here are some photos of the Garden. Due to the skills of my photography, it appears not as beautiful as it should be.

Do not buy any curio if you come to China

May 2nd, 2008 | No Comments »

There are more and more foreigners come to China, they like buy Chinese characteristics as gifts for their family members and friends.

China cultural relics and curios are the most popular goods to them, but if you do not want to become a stupid person, I will not advise you to buy these old toys. Anyhow there’s nothing really old here.

There are a lot of curio shops around the Chang an Avenue, things in these shops are very expensive, we Chinese never shopping there, they do not fossick for Chinese clients too.

These curio shops fossick for foreigner clients mainly, they can get a very large profit in the deals.

Now, it wants less than 100 days to the Olympic Games, more and more foreigners come to China from all the world. The curio shops are preparing price hikes for exorbitant profits. So if you come to China, you muse beware when u are shopping.

So, what are the best gifts buy from China? I think Chinese Knot, The toys of 12 Chinese zodiac animals, Pu-erh Tea, Beijing snacks and Chinese Scented tea are all nice choices.
