Occident and Orient

This entry was posted on Sunday, November 25th, 2007.

I watched a log of movies in these days, lost, house, prison break, heroes, and so on. These films help me improve my English, and let me have a thorough knowledge of the occident world. So, I think there are some different views or habits between occident world and orient world.

These different including eating, dressing, living, driving, hospital, police and cultural. Occident be compare to orient, you will find it extremely interesting, or have a thorough knowledge of China.

1. Chinese food are more complex than Western Cuisine:

There are mainly eight famous Chinese cuisines, every cuisine have myriad foods, if you want, you may eat different foods every day. What is more important is that a lot of foods are eaten at a given time and location.

2. Style of dressing between East and West are opposites:

This different is interesting I think, but I'm not sure my option is right. I found women makeup more as she grows older in west countries, but women makeup more as younger in China.

3. Loan for the house is not welcome yet:

I have to paid what was owing quickly. It is the most thought in Chinese.

4. The car penetration rate at China is less than USA:

Yeah, there are many guys, and there are many cars, but the number of guys is more large than the number of cars, so the car penetration rate is very very low. There is few young guys have car on oneself, I'm 25 years old, no car :(

5. Poor guys dread falling ill:

I puzzled when I watched HOUSE, why guys are not to refuse the physical check-up, they are expensive, isn't it? Then, I see, the rule of medicare system in western is protected poor, even if they have no money, they also go hospital when they falling ill.

6. Western movies and foreign stars are very acceptable:

I am sure, you have never, or just few, watched Chinese Movies or Chinese Films, but the most for foreign musics, films and movies are popular in China. They are made in USA, Japan, Britain, Canadian, France, and so on, we'll be able to accept everything from here.

It’s not environmentally sustainable for every Chinese person to have a gasoline driven car. The rest of the world should show an example by spending money on alternative energy sources instead of stupid temporary hybrid technologies.

It’s clearly not environmentally sustainable for every American person to have a gasoline driven car, either. What boggles me is the fact that the automobile industry hasn’t improved all that much, besides “gasoline efficient” in the last 100 years or so. We make LEAPS in the computer industry, as well as the healthcare industry, but we can’t improve the automobile industry to not rely heavily on fossil fuels? Something isn’t right.

Mike, it’s because people view Engineers as just “nerds” and prefer letting the economists and politicians decide what’s best for the world :)

Those are some very intersting observations. Did you put them in order of importance or what is most noticable?

You’re very right about makeup and dress as well. Speaking about Americans, culturally we value youth instead of age. This is especially true for women. They wear more makup in an attempt to cover their age. It’s rude to ask an American woman her age and common practice for a woman to lie about her age. It’s a cultural tradition which still strongly exists.
Notice in your viewing of American tv shows and movies that there are much fewer older actresses than actors. Older women are much less popular than men.

your observations are really interesting. my husband lived in china for one month in 1993 and came back with a totally different view of chinese food in america!! he had some amazing food there, and really enjoyed his time there. he was at a college where he was paired with a student who was needing to practise english.

more recently he has gone over on business. He really loves the country of China.
anyway, i think we here in america have a lot to learn from the Chinese about respect for older people. it is a shame the way the elderly are treated here. really. it breaks my heart. it is like the people who treat them so horribly don’t realize that one day THEY will be elderly.

neat obeservations….i will check back. thanks for dropping by my blog..
