The first month of lunar year, we Chinese are not allowed by parents or grandparents to do haircut until the 2nd day of the second month. Why do not Chinese have haircut during the first month of the lunar year? It is an interesting history.

Haircut

Han Chinese are an ethnic group indigenous to China and the largest single ethnic group in the world. The name Han comes from the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.), which succeeded the short-lived Qin Dynasty (221 B.C.–206 B.C.) that united China.

During the Han Dynasty, Han Chinese believed hair is a part of life, so they never get a haircut.

After that, China has undergone Three Kingdoms (220BC–280BC), Jin Dynasty (265BC–420BC), Southern & Northern Dynasties (420BC–589BC), Sui Dynasty (581BC–619BC), Tang Dynasty (618BC–907BC), Song Dynasty (960BC–1279BC), Yuan Dynasty (1271BC–1368BC), Ming Dynasty (1368BC–1644BC).

Han Chinese is the most population of China first and last. They never getting a haircut.

The Qing Dynasty was the last ruling dynasty of China from 1644 to 1912. The dynasty was founded by the Manchu clan Aisin Gioro in what is today northeast China. The ruler of Qing Dynasty was not Han Chinese, so he required Han Chinese have to get a haircut, otherwise “head cut”.

Han Chinese cannot exist without head, so they getted a haircut because they have to. But they avoided getting a haircut due on the first month of each year. The custom still obtains :)

My experience yesterday had me scratching my head. I was in Singapore’s Chinatown, and went to a barber advertising $10 haircuts. The one english-speaking gal made a big deal of telling me this time of year they do haircuts for $50, not $10. I’m all for learning other cultures, but this is one tradition that doesn’t make sense. Anybody know what that was all about? BTW, I declined the special haircut. Cheers, Billy

I don’t know why. Maybe there are less workers and more customers in the lunar new year. Wait for a month is a smart choice :D
